The Pacific Ocean
The largest and deepest Approximately 25,000 islands, most in the South Pacific. Seventeen independent nations are located in the Pacific: Australia Fiji Japan Kiribati Marshall Islands Micronesia Nauru New Zealand Palau Papua New Guinea the Philippines Samoa Pacific Forum Solomon Islands Republic of China (Taiwan) Tonga Tuvalu Vanuatu. Also within the Pacific are the U.S. state of Hawaii and several island territories including American Samoa and Guam. More than 1,000 volcanoes and seamounts are in the South Pacific. The Pacific Ocean covers 64 million square miles, 28% of the earth's surface and twice as big as the Atlantic Ocean. The deepest, minus 36,200 feet (11,033 meters) in the Mariana Trench And lastly, The Pacific was the last ocean discovered by Europeans. The first European to see the Pacific was the Spanish explorer Balboa, on 25 September 1513. Early Explorer Magellan named it for its peaceful conditions he encountered when he traveled the Pacific Ocean. |
